My venture in the business of Hungarian wines started in 2002. With the provision of business connections in Hungary by Mr. VIZI László, the first Consul General of Hungary in Hong Kong, and being highly impressed by his great enthusiasm in urging me to take the effort to have a good understanding of the Hungarian wines for the consideration of launching such products in our market, I had a 10 days’ visit in Hungary. The schedule of my visit was arranged by my present Hungarian business partners and of course visits in the wine regions and wineries were the major activities.

During the visits, I was quite fascinated by the special characters and unexpected high quality of the Hungarian wines, and also the beauty and historical atmosphere of most of the wine regions. Our first order of Hungarian wines for the Hong Kong market was placed soon after these visits!

When I had the decision of importing the Hungarian wines, I was quite prepared to take serious measure with the acquisition of basic knowledge about wines and the required skills in wine tasting. During the first 2 years of involvement in the wine business, because of frequent visits in the wineries in Hungary, Australia and New Zealand, and having close contacts with wine makers and professionals in the trade, I established my confidence and ability in distinguishing the quality of wines. Since then, I had visits in Hungarian wine regions every year to taste the new wines and to choose the wines for our own circulation needs. The more I understood with the Hungarian wines, the more I realised with the high marketing potential of the Hungarian wines.

Before 2000, Hungarian wine was quite unknown to wine lovers in Hong Kong. Only once in a while, there were small quantities of Tokaji Aszús or Bikavérs appearing in specialized wine stores. By the time we firstly introduced the reds of Villany and Szekszárd in our tasting sessions, most of our invited guests were very surprised to find that Hungary is a quality red wine producing country. Some of them even didn’t belief that Hungary was producing fine wines for hundreds of years. In order to circulate our carrying wines effectively, we started to operate our own direct outlets for Hungarian wines in late 2002. We are now operating 2 wines stores mainly selling Hungarian wines and with a collection of over 100 different wines from most of the best Hungarian wine regions. With our effort in the past 8 years, I trust that we had aroused the awareness of wine drinkers in our market that Hungary wines are worth considering fine wines and had also established an image for the Hungarian wines as “ Wines of high quality and with distinct characters.”

Really?! Ne mondja!... Magyarországon bort?...)tovább...
